The first rule of Crossfit: Make sure everyone knows you Crossfit

I have this habit when I am out and about I end up looking at people’s shoes because yeah, I am looking for nanos or metcons. I love spotting them because when you see a Crossfitter it makes you feel like you are part of a secret society (that's obviously not so secret). We wear these outfits like a uniform because it represents who we are and what we are doing. It’s a type of lifestyle and we aren’t shy about it. We are incredibly proud to wear our nanos and anything to match.

The downside about our lifestyles is that it kind of burns a hole right through that wallet! We all know it is not cheap. I started trying to write a blog about “budgeting while looking badass” obviously I got nowhere with that idea because I haven't shopped secondhand for any of my gear. Granted, there are some who can budget but after being at the games this year, everyone was buying everything!

We have all these brands such as Reebok, Lululemon, Nike, LifeasRX, ROKfit, Caffeine & Kilos, KillCliff, Progenex, Savage Barbell, your own box gear and many other companies. The list could go on and on. There is literally an abundance to choose from and this doesn’t even include the gear that we need to perform a lift or pull up.

If we took a look at your average Crossfitter, men or women and what is in their gym bag, how much do you think that smelly gym bag is worth?

Probably more than we expect! Let’s take look at,  "What's in your gym bag?"

(my gym bag - some items I have were left at the gym)

  1. Lifters $100-300
  2. Wrist wraps $25-50
  3. Nanos $100-170
  4. Lacrosse ball(s) $5-20
  5. Knee sleeves $30-100
  6. Jump rope $17-85
  7. Palm guards $20-35
  8. Lifting Belt $20-110
  9. Water bottle $5-25
  10. Tape $5-15
  11. Headbands $15-25
  12. Lifting straps $10-25
  13. Resistance band(s) $10-35
  14. Gym bag $30-200

Yup, it all adds up but the question is...

What make us want to have them? Why do we need them?

So I decided to ask a few men and women- “As a Crossfitter, what made you buy all your gear?"

“Cause I wear it everyday like if I had to wore a business suit to the office” - Elise Hoefsmit

"I buy the gear that makes me feel the most comfortable with what I'm doing. With crosfit the best gear for me are clothes than allow me to do the olympic lifts and the gymnastics without hindering the movements. 2 bonuses is that CrossFit gear are typically dryfit so that you don't feel drenched with sweat, and they have style that sets you apart." - Gregory Figuereo

"because I find it use of functionally or i like the color ;) like all my tights" -John Cheah

"functionality, good workout stuff costs money, and it last" -Chris Maller

"Wanting to get better and look the part" - Joy Somers

It comes down to what is going to make us perform better and what is going to get us there? It's all about function and a bit fashion doesn't hurt. Everything that we use in and out of the gym acknowledges our strength and determination. So, next time you spot a pair of nanos while you are walking down the street; know that you apart of a something bigger than just workout clothes and gear.

I will break down what is in my bag and why I got it

Bag – Best American Duffel Bag – I had a bag that was falling apart after many years of use and took birthday money and got this bag off of eBay because I need a bag to carry my stuff to the gym

Towler, toiletries, etc. – I go to the gym before work, so I take stuff like deodorant and a toothbrush so my co-workers don’t hate me

Nike Metcon 1s – My previous shoes were too minimalist and I’m a Nike fan, so I asked for the Metcons for my birthday last year. When they are toast, I will switch to some Nanos (I think they are 4s) that someone at the box gave away because they didn’t like them. I just need shoes that feel good.

Reebok CF Lifters – They are half a size too big, but a buddy actually bought a pair and was shipped two pairs. The company he bought them from told him to keep the extra pair so he sold them to me for well less than retail cost. I got them because I heard they would help. They do.

Tape, bandaids, antibiotic ointment, etc. – I like to tape up my thumbs when Oly lifting and nicks happen.

Homemade athletic tape gymnastics grips – I want to protect my hands and I really like these homemade ones.

Wrist wraps – So my wrists don’t hurt more than they already do. Plus, they have bacon on them!

Jump rope – I have my own so that I am always using the same one. I still can’t do DUs worth anything, but I am practicing at home a little lately….

The big thing is that I use everything I have on a regular basis and I rarely replace something before it is worn out.

But, if you have the money to go through gear every two works, good for you. :)
