Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.).
Hey Fam! I'm the head Olympic Weightlifting coach of at Black Flag Barbell, Assistant Coach and Media Director at Black Flag Athletics, and co-host of Black Flag Radio. I've been at this strength thing for over 15 years through the exploration and adaptation of various training methods, including Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit®, Strongman, Powerlifting, and Bodybuilding. I love getting outside, traveling, hiking, and looking for adventure outside the confines of the gym. My claim to fame is my great set of calves :)
Which class time do you usually attend?
Black Flag Barbell Club
When did you start doing CrossFit®?
How did you hear about CrossFit® and what was your first workout?
My brother got me hooked. If I remember correctly, it was Fran. Took about 10:30. Probably why I can't remember :)
What were you doing before CrossFit®?
Abusing drugs and alcohol. Didn't have discipline in my life and a major void which I filled with rather dumb decisions to properly support my training. CrossFit® set me straight and introduced me to Olympic Weightlifting which I have fallen madly in love with.
How has your approach to CrossFit® changed since first starting?
When I first got into to it was go hard, all the time. With experience, education, and maturity my focus has changed on intent, mindfulness, and skill progression. Since, becoming the head Oly coach at our gym, I have dedicated a large portion of my time continuing to develop as a teacher, with technique and quality of movement being a focal point.
Favorite WOD or movement / Least favorite?
Favorite - Snatch, any variation including kettle-bell. Least - burpees. I'm 6'4 and it's a long way down and back up.
What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit®?
Greater passion for taking care of others and taking care of myself. Attention to detail, dedication, discipline, healthier lifestyle and healthier mental attitude.
What inspires you?
The community at Black Flag. The athletes and coaches I get to be around on a daily basis drive me to be a better person, coach, and athlete. Tom Rini, the owner, is a fantastic role model. I would not be where I am now with him.
What would you say to someone starting CrossFit® for the first time?
Don't Wait! And come visit us at Black Flag.
Something you might not know about me:
I talk to myself in my head when I train and workout all the time. If you see me mouthing to myself, I'm not crazy I promise :) I'm verbally and mentally visualizing what I'm doing.
Thanks for reading my untold story,
