NAME: ALEX ARBOGAST
BOX: CROSSFIT STEEL SOUL
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.).
I am married with two children. Wife Brittney, daughter Avery 5, and Son Alex 3. I own two affiliates CrossFit® Steel Soul and Steel Soul Dwight. I have a house flipping business in addition to CrossFit®. If I have spare time I usually take my kids to the box to play. They LOVE going to watch their Mother work out in the 5:30 PM class.
Which affiliate box are you training at?
CrossFit® Steel Soul 5 am usually but I attend all class times
When did you start doing CrossFit®?
How did you first hear about CrossFit®? Did you want to try it or were you reluctant?
My friend Paul told me I had to give it a shot. My first wod was 40-30-20-10 of ball tosses, deadlifts 135, and push-ups. There was a 20 min cap. I finished in 19:11 although I’m sure my reps were garbage.
What were you doing before CrossFit®? Do you do anything else besides CrossFit®?
Nothing physically. I have degenerative disc disease and was advised that the only solution to my back issues would be a spinal fusion. Not the case! I am happy to report that I have no back pain these days.
How has your approach to CrossFit® changed since first starting?
My approach hasn’t changed much. From the beginning, I show up and do my best. However, my role has changed tremendously. My Athletes now look to me to lead by example which is awesome.
Favorite WOD or movement /Least favorite?
Squat Snatch love /Manmakers hate
What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit®?
Mentally I definitely have the ability to get comfortable in the dark place. I get butterflies before every 3,2,1 GO because I know where I’m headed. Because of this I don’t really get too rattled with everyday life. I feel like most things are only a big deal if I let them be. Most of the time, I just do what I can and move on. Physically I went from 249.8lbs and couldn’t put on my own socks some days down to 203 for a while and now 210 and 9% body fat.
What helps you get the most out of your CrossFit® Workouts? What motivates/inspires you?
My fellow Athletes drive me to be better. Even though I’m 31, I believe my best days athletically speaking are in front of me. I’m consistently getting better, stronger, faster, and learning new skills. It’s amazing to me when I think about what I’m able to do now compared to only 3 years ago.
What would you say to someone starting CrossFit® for the first time?
Give it at least a month before you make up your mind. It may seem overwhelming to begin with but everyone was in your shoes when they started and they remember the feeling very well. People only care about your effort and nothing else. You will catch on quickly and gains will come at a rapid pace if you commit yourself. Fitness will become a lifelong journey and your CrossFit® community will be there to support you every step of the way.
Something you might not know about me or something you want to share that we didn't ask!
I played golf professionally for a short period of time on the Gateway and Pepsi Tours. Compared to baseball this would be like Double-A. Although I played nearly all sports growing up I never lifted weights until CrossFit®. I was VERY intimidated on my first day.
