NAME: BROOKE STRAIT
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.).
I am a stay at home mom to two beautiful girls. I have a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old. They are always busy and make each day exciting. Being a parent is like always being on defense. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are my reason for pushing hard through each day.
When did you start doing CrossFit®?
This is my 6th year doing CrossFit®. In those 6 years, I have had both my daughters. This is the first time in my life I have found an active lifestyle that has stuck! I love everything CrossFit® has to offer.
How did you first hear about CrossFit®? Did you want to try it or were you reluctant?
I saw the CrossFit® games on TV. I was amazed at the things the girls were capable of doing. They were so strong and so badass. I remember thinking I wanted to do everything they were doing. It took about 6 months after that to walk into a Box and try it out but I’m so glad I did!
What were you doing before CrossFit®?
Before CrossFit®, I had done Zumba. I had become a Zumba Instructor and really enjoyed it. But I did have a desire to gain strength and muscle and was wanting something a little bit more.
How has your approach to CrossFit® changed since first starting?
When it first started it was just to be healthier and try to hit some goals I thought were maybe impossible (pull-ups and muscle ups). Now 6 years later I have had my two kids, lost 75#s and continue to hit PRs and get faster in all my WODs. Now I’m looking to compete more frequently and push myself to new limits! I really love the feeling of success and getting better.
Favorite WOD or movement /Least favorite?
Snatching is definitely my favorite movement. I remember going into CrossFit® and asking “what’s that thing where you throw the bar over your head and stand it up?” My least favorite would have to be Thrusters. They are death.
What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit®?
Mentally soo much! I have learned to change my negative thinking to positive thinking when the workouts get hard and I love that change. I have lost 75#s doing CrossFit® all while becoming a new mom to two girls! My diet has completely changed and I have learned so much about myself and how to fuel my body. It’s definitely been a process over the years. Lots of baby steps in the right direction. Those baby steps add up to so much in the end!
What helps you get the most out of your CrossFit® Workouts?
I’m inspired by progress. Hoping for my own progress. Looking back and seeing how far I have come is really motivating. I love to set goals and crush them!
What would you say to someone starting CrossFit® for the first time?
Don’t be intimidated by it all. Come in and start small and slow. Take it all in but don't get overwhelmed. Again, it’s about baby steps. Just show up and try your best! You will be amazed at what you are capable of.
Any embarrassing gym moments you'd like to share?
It may be embarrassing for some but I have learned to not care. Being a mom has made me pee during double unders and lifting heavy. It’s just the new normal! Haha!
How do you feel about nutrition? Are you super strict/flexible?
I’m pretty strict when I have certain goals in place. But I also like to give myself some time to enjoy life in between the goals I set for myself. I had to be very strict for a while to lose the 75#s. Now I try to eat to perform but I also love to bake with kids. It’s called balance. 😉
