The People of CrossFit®: My Untold Story #7

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc.).

I'm a stay at home mom, and I was looking for a way to better my health. And as cheesy as it sounds it ended up making me a better person too!

Which class time do you usually attend?

I am a class jumper, I go to the 8:30 and 9:30 am classes, and the 5:00 and 6:00 pm classes regularly. The only two classes you will never see me at are the 5:00 and 6:00 AM classes!

When did you start doing CrossFit®?

I started CrossFit® 3 years ago. My brother and sister took me to my first class pretty much kicking and screaming, and I had reassured them I would be quitting as soon as the first month I had already paid for was up!! And here I am 3 years later!! 

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first workout?

A friend of mine was a trainer at the box I go to, she had invited me before but I never wanted to do CrossFit®! My first workout was 2000m row 200 double unders and a 2-mile run. I had to have it cut in half and I was pretty sure at that point I was going to hate CrossFit®.

What were you doing before CrossFit?

I was a sporadic exerciser I never was able to stick to any one thing for any longer than 9 months or so.  

How has your approach to CrossFit changed since first starting?

When I first started I always wanted to lift heavier, even if I wasn't ready, and then I had some really smart trainers who made sure I understood the importance to getting the fundamentals, so that I could stay safe, and not injure myself!

Favorite WOD or movement

I would say my favorite movements would have to be cleans and push presses.

Least favorite WOD or movement

My least favorite has got to be a three-way tie for wallballs, thrusters, and running!

What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit?

I have seen my body lean out, I can do more with my kids, I am way more active in my everyday life. It has made me more mentally tough, I have got my confidence back, and I am an all-around happier person. I know I can accomplish hard things, and even better I know my body can move and complete hard movements and workouts. When I started I couldn't only jump the height of a single step, and now 3 years later I can jump up on a 20" box! It hasn't been fast, it hasn't been easy, but the changes are worth all the work, and time, and effort that has gone into my CrossFit® journey!

What helps you get the most out of your CrossFit Workouts? What motivates/inspires you?

My motivation has got be the fact that I never want to get back to where I started. And my inspiration is all the amazing people I have met, and become friends with at Crossfit Avenue. These people encourage me and help push me to be better, there is no way I would have lasted 3 years without the amazing people!

What would you say to someone starting CrossFit for the first time?

My advice would be to Push through those first few wods, keep going when it feels hard do not give up. Embrace this crazy community because if you do you will be rewarded with so much more than you will ever know!

Something you might not know about me: we love details!

I am a mom of 4 beautiful kids. I had my first 2 when I was in my early 20s and when my second one was born she had to be life flighted to a hospital 3 hours away from where I delivered her. I was stuck in that hospital, away from my baby for 3 days before they would release me to go see her.

Fast forward 8 years, I started CrossFit® just a few months before I found out I was pregnant with my fourth child and with the help of smart and knowledgeable trainers, I was able to safely do CrossFit® up until 2 days before my due date. I had a c-section and 12 hours later my baby boy was here but with a collapsed lung so he was life flighted to the same hospital his sister was sent to 8 years earlier.

(8 1/2 months pregnant) 

This situation felt very reminiscent of what we had gone through with his sister but there was one difference now, despite me being 8 years older, I was stronger and in better shape than I had been 8 years earlier, so 12 hours after having major surgery my doctor cleared me to leave the hospital and take that long 3 hour drive to meet my husband and baby out at the children's hospital. Instead of being days behind them I was a couple of hours behind them! Crossfit has made my life better in so many ways, but this was one experience that proved just how profound a difference it had made physically!
