The People of CrossFit®: My Untold Story #1

Tell us a little bit about yourself...

My name is Tyler Lancaster, I am from Cañon City, Colorado! Currently pursuing a BS in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Recreation Degree with an emphasis in K-12 Physical Education with a minor in Education! I love exploring the world around me, hiking the outdoors, sports, snowboarding, and riding my motorcycle. I have a passion for the community as well as fitness! I want to share my passions with kids and adults through becoming a PE teacher, CrossFit® affiliate owner/coach, pastor and motivational speaker! I am loved by God, a beautiful and loving girlfriend, two amazing parents and sister, and two toy poodles along with other family and friends! I am the richest, most blessed, most undeserving man on this planet! And to say I love CrossFit® would be an understatement. 

Which affiliate box are you training at? Which class time do you usually attend?

I currently train at CrossFit® Cañon City and CrossFit 8100! I usually attend the morning and afternoon classes.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I started doing CrossFit® during my sophomore year of high school.

How did you hear about CrossFit and what was your first workout?

CrossFit® was first introduced to me when I was flipping channels on tv and saw the CrossFit® games on ESPN I’ve never seen anything like it! Men and women were super fit with muscle and were doing EVERYTHING (biking, swimming, climbing, lifting, etc)! It was incredible! It looked so cool, but I had no idea how to get into it, so I kind of just almost forgot about it. 

I can’t remember my first CrossFit® workout. I’m pretty sure it had box jumps and a light barbell involved for me.

 

What were you doing before CrossFit and how were you introduced to CrossFit?

Before CrossFit®, I played sports as a kid then stopped playing sports due to the sports becoming more competitive and less fun. I was smaller, skinnier, and had less confidence. I weight lifted with the high school football team but I didn’t play any sports. I also did some weightlifting with my dad!


I was introduced to 
CrossFit® by a divine connection from God. My honors English teacher who barely knew me gave me a TigerFit flyer for the summer and said she thought I’d really enjoy it. I showed up, NO GUYS...Turns out I was the only guy and it was a summer program for the high school girls volleyball/basketball team. I then realized it was CrossFit® like I saw on tv!!! (MINDBLOWN) I stuck with it and have stayed ever since, eventually becoming a CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer and am now currently training classes!

How has your approach to CrossFit changed since first starting?

My approach to CrossFit® has changed dramatically since I started. I had a real ego and confidence problem, being skinny at the start. A friend of mine who happened to be my boss when I was lifeguarding told me that going to the gym isn’t a fashion show, you’re there to get better/healthier period. It doesn’t matter what other people are doing or how fit anyone else is, you are all on your own journey. Leave it at that. I am now more secure in who I am and where I am at and am not ashamed of having to modify or RX when needed to help me become the best version of myself possible. I strive not to compare myself to others, which can be so detrimental to mental, physical, and spiritual growth.

            

What types of changes have you seen (mentally, physically, and/or lifestyle) since starting CrossFit?

Since starting CrossFit®, I have seen drastic changes mentally, physically, spiritually, and in my lifestyle. 


Mentally: I am more confident and content with who I am and where I am at in my journey, always striving to be better. I used to be caught up in a serious addiction that I am no longer in. I feel a sense of belonging and acceptance in the community! I am mentally tougher in all areas of my life!

Physically: I am stronger, faster, fitter, more energized! More muscle mass than I have ever had! 

Spiritually: Closer to God. Found my purpose and passion. Serve God and others using my gifts God gave me through CrossFit®


Lifestyle: Exercise can be FUN! Also learned how to balance life with exercise, recreation, family, God, school, etc!

What helps you get the most out of your CrossFit Workouts? What motivates/inspires you?

Many things help motivate and inspire me to get the most out of my workouts. It’s FUN! I have a blast doing it. Cranking the music and people dancing, and cheering! Seeing an elderly woman doing handstand pushups, seeing someone conquer a rope climb for the first time! Seeing girlfriend, family, friends, having fun and getting fitter! Brings tears to my eyes.


I want to be a role model for kids and adults on how to live a fun, healthy, balanced lifestyle! I put forth my best in all that I do for His glory and not for my own. I take care of the body he gave me so I can serve Him and others, have a healthy body for my wife someday and be able to keep up with my kids someday and life itself!

What would you say to someone starting CrossFit for the first time?

I would tell them it might be scary at first. But if you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong. Don’t COMPARE yourself! Focus on your own journey. Be content with where you are, don’t ever stop striving to become better mentally, physically, spiritually. Life’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Be patient, enjoy the ride. Go full gas pedal but remember to stop and take in the view every once in a while.

Some things you might not know about me: Jesus Freak, former break dancer, I have a supermodel girlfriend!!! I am blessed beyond what I will ever deserve! Baywatch beach lifeguard is still a dream/bucket list job!...including DJ and Mythbuster! Love the heat!
